Buying a bicycle is easy. Buying the right one for your roads, height and budget takes a little care. Use this checklist before you pay.
1. Decide why you need it
- City commute — hybrid or city bike
- Mixed roads / light off-road — MTB
- Long rides / speed — road bike
- Kids — size by height, not only age
2. Check frame size
- Both feet should touch the ground when you sit
- Handlebar should not force you to stretch or hunch
- Always try a short test ride if possible
3. New vs second-hand
New: warranty, fewer surprises.
Used: lower price — inspect carefully:
- Rust or cracks on the frame
- Worn chain, cassette and brake pads
- Wheels true (look from behind while spinning)
- Gears shift smoothly on every step
4. Parts that matter most
- Brakes — stop quickly when you squeeze the levers
- Tyres — no deep cracks; budget for replacement if old
- Chain — dry or rusty means maintenance soon
- Bearings — no grinding noise when wheels spin
- Saddle — comfort matters; easy to change later
5. Set a real budget
Count the bike plus lock, helmet, lights and bell. A very cheap bike with constant repairs often costs more than a solid mid-range one.
6. Buy safely
- Prefer trusted shops or verified sellers
- Match photos, condition and location with the ad
- Never pay a large amount without seeing the bike
- Meet in a public place and test ride first
7. After you buy
- Get a strong lock
- Wear a helmet
- Fit front and rear lights for night riding
- Oil the chain and check tyre pressure
- Re-check bolts after the first week of riding
Quick rule: correct size → good brakes and wheels → test ride → fair price → safe handover.
